This alteration follows Musk’s revision of the criteria for obtaining the blue tick, which now involves a monthly fee instead of adhering to specific qualifications. By subscribing to X Blue for $8 per month, users gain the option to hide their check marks on both their profiles and posts. However, it’s important to note that the check mark may continue to appear in certain contexts, and some aspects could potentially disclose the user’s active subscription status.
The platform encountered criticism due to this revised verification process, which was initially intended to signify a user’s legitimacy and was typically awarded to public figures, media personalities, and politicians.
Since Musk assumed control of the platform last year, he has introduced a series of changes aimed at revitalizing the verification process and enhancing the subscription service. Nevertheless, the new ability to obscure the blue check mark has ignited a degree of controversy. Some users view it as a means to safeguard their privacy and avoid potential ridicule for paying for verification. On the other hand, there are those who contend that this move diminishes the badge’s intrinsic value and transparency within the platform’s ecosystem.
Lili Reinhart, an actress and influential presence on social media, expressed her reservations about this modification, emphasizing that the blue check mark once held significance and now feels diluted. In a similar vein, acclaimed author Stephen King criticized the decision, implying that verification used to carry weight but now appears to be merely an additional perk for those who can afford it.
