Post-Election Tension Spain Grapples with Political Deadlock
Centre-right parties have emerged as the top winners in Spain’s recent election, but they have fallen short of securing a majority in the parliament. The main story of the election, however, revolves around Pedro Sánchez, the Socialist prime minister, who has proven to be a comeback artist. As the votes were being tallied, it became evident that neither the Right-wing nor the Left-wing bloc had a clear path to forming a majority government.
The centre-right People’s Party (PP) led the Right-wing bloc and obtained 136 seats out of 350, slightly lower than the predicted 150 seats. When combined with the 33 seats won by the hard-right Vox party, the bloc still did not reach the required 176 seats needed for a majority. With both major blocs virtually tied, fresh elections may be a looming possibility as they struggle to form a viable government.
