Bella Ramsey’s Emmy nomination irks the internet

Bella Ramsey, known for their role in Game of Thrones, has been nominated for an Emmy Award, becoming the third nonbinary actor to receive this prestigious recognition.

However, the announcement of their nomination has triggered a strong backlash on the internet. The negative reaction appears to stem from the British actor’s sexuality and their advocacy for gender-neutral categories in award ceremonies.

One user commented, “‘Best Actress’ for an openly nonbinary person who wore a binder throughout filming? Hahahahaha, that’s ridiculous.”

Another user expressed, “Award shows should have more inclusive categories for individuals with gender-expansive identities.”

Competing for the award, the 19-year-old will be up against Sarah Snook (Succession), Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets), and Keri Russell (The Diplomat).

In a previous interview with Vanity Fair, Bella Ramsey, star of The Last of Us, spoke about feeling uncomfortable being assigned to a category that did not align with their identity.

“The current categories feel heavily gendered due to the language used,” Ramsey stated, referring to the Best Actress category.

Ramsey added, “I don’t want the language restrictions within the categories to prevent nonbinary actors like myself from being celebrated.”
