Running has become synonymous with Tom Cruise’s movies, with the actor sprinting in an impressive 44 out of his 52 films. In light of this, top running coaches have taken a closer look at Cruise’s running technique.
Ned Trim, head coach of New York’s Mile High Run Club, observed that Cruise tends to tense up when running. Trim emphasized that top-level sprinters focus on staying relaxed, as a relaxed body allows for optimal muscle function.
Ben Rosario, executive director of the Hoka Northern Arizona Elite team, noted that Cruise’s hands become too tight while running. He shared a technique taught to young runners, advising them to imagine holding a potato chip between their thumb and forefinger, ensuring a light touch.
Interestingly, it appears that Cruise has a rule against anyone running alongside him on-screen. Annabelle Wallis, his co-star in 2017’s The Mummy, disclosed that Cruise initially declined her request to run alongside him in scenes. However, Wallis managed to change his mind by strategically timing her treadmill runs to impress him. As a result, additional running scenes were added to the film.
While Cruise’s running style may have room for improvement according to running coaches, there’s no denying the enduring impact of his running sequences in his iconic films.
