Pandemic Update: WHO Highlights Persistent Presence of Covid

WHO Warns: Covid-19 Continues to Pose a Significant Risk, Responsible for Nearly 1,000 Deaths Weekly in Europe

The World Health Organisation’s European office has issued a warning that the risk of Covid-19 remains prevalent, emphasizing that the virus is still causing approximately 1,000 deaths per week in the region. Despite the declaration that the pandemic is no longer a global health emergency, the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, stressed that Covid-19 has not disappeared. The European region, consisting of 53 countries, continues to grapple with significant mortality rates attributed to the virus.

Kluge expressed concern over the underreporting of Covid-19 deaths by certain countries, suggesting that the actual death toll is likely higher than reported. He called upon authorities to prioritize vaccination efforts and strive for a minimum vaccination coverage of 70% among vulnerable populations.

In addition to the immediate impacts of Covid-19, Kluge highlighted the long-term consequences of the virus. Recent estimates indicate that approximately 36 million people in the region have experienced “long Covid” symptoms over the past three years, an ailment that remains poorly understood. Kluge emphasized the need for comprehensive diagnostics and treatment for this condition, asserting that true recovery from the pandemic requires a deeper understanding of long Covid. He urged further research in this area, noting its current under-recognition.

The warning from the WHO serves as a reminder that the battle against Covid-19 is far from over and calls for continued vigilance, robust vaccination efforts, and increased attention to the long-term health impacts of the virus.
