Election Drama Sanam Javed of PTI Enters the Ring Against Maryam Nawaz

LAHORE: Sanam Javed, a jailed activist from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is set to enter the electoral arena against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz for a provincial assembly seat in Lahore, according to her father’s announcement on Tuesday.

Sanam is among numerous PTI members currently in custody in connection with the May 9 riots that erupted following the arrest of then PTI chairman Imran Khan in a corruption case.

She faces charges in multiple cases, including an attack on the Corps Commander House in Lahore and the torching of police vehicles in the Cantonment area during violent protests earlier this year.

Speaking to Geo News over the phone, Sanam’s father revealed that she would submit nomination papers for Lahore’s PP-150 constituency to contest the general elections scheduled for February 8 next year. The incarcerated activist will run on the PTI’s ticket and also submit nomination papers for the women’s reserved seat.

“We are gathering documents to file her [Sanam Javed’s] nomination papers,” said her father.

Meanwhile, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz has not yet announced the constituency from which she will participate in the elections. The PML-N’s parliamentary board is conducting meetings to interview candidates for party tickets.

As per the election schedule, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will begin receiving nomination papers from prospective candidates tomorrow (December 20). The process will commence after the oathtaking of district returning officers (DROs) and returning officers (ROs) by the electoral body as per the Elections Act 2017 today (Tuesday).
