BJP-Led Government in Uttar Pradesh Takes Controversial Stand Against Halal-Certified Goods

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has imposed an immediate ban on the sale of products carrying a halal certification throughout the state, covering the entire supply chain from production to distribution and sale. The ban excludes products intended for export. The order stresses strict legal measures against individuals or entities engaged in any aspect of the production and sale of halal-certified medicines, medical devices, and cosmetics within the state. It argues that the parallel system of halal certification causes confusion about the quality of food items and is deemed untenable under Section 89 of the Food Safety and Standards Act. The government emphasizes that the authority to determine food quality lies with institutions specified in Section 29 of the Act.

The move comes after a police case against companies and organizations accused of exploiting religious sentiments through allegedly forged halal certificates. Entities such as Halal India Private Limited Chennai, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Halal Trust Delhi, Halal Council of India Mumbai, and Jamiat Ulama Maharashtra face charges of issuing forged certificates to manipulate sales based on religious preferences. In response, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Halal Trust labeled the allegations as “baseless” and pledged to take legal measures to counter what they deemed as misinformation. The ban highlights the government’s commitment to upholding regulations and addressing concerns about the potential misuse of halal certification for economic gains.
