Big Bash League to Commence on December 7 with Revamped Format and Fixture
The highly anticipated 2023-2024 edition of Australia’s Big Bash T20 League (BBL) is set to kick off on December 7, offering fans an exciting revamped format and fixtures.
Cricket Australia has announced the dates for the summer tournament, following a decision to reduce the number of matches and create a more focused schedule. The upcoming BBL 13 season will feature 44 games, including 40 home-and-away matches and a new-look four-game final, culminating in a rare mid-week final.
In the revamped format, each participating team will play 10 league matches. The top four teams will then qualify for the knockout phase, adding an extra layer of competitiveness to the tournament. Previously, the BBL playoffs involved five teams competing in five knockout matches.
The action-packed season will begin with the Brisbane Heat hosting the Melbourne Stars at the Gabba, followed by six more matches. There will be a pause in the fixtures from December 14 to 18 to accommodate Australia’s opening Test against Pakistan in Perth. Fans can look forward to thrilling double-headers on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
The highly anticipated four-game finals series will lead up to the grand finale on January 24, which will be played mid-week, only the second time in BBL history.
BBL General Manager Alistair Dobson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We’re incredibly pleased and excited with the BBL fixtures we’ve been able to deliver this season.” Fans can expect a captivating and fiercely competitive tournament.
The Perth Scorchers, having secured their fifth crown last season by defeating the Brisbane Heat, will be defending their title in the upcoming BBL season.
