Electrifying the Roads Pakistan’s First Electric Vehicle Hits the Streets

LAHORE: Malik Amin Aslam, the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, highlighted the positive impact of the newly introduced electric vehicle (EV) policy on the country’s transport sector during a ceremony on Friday.

Speaking at the launch event of Pakistan’s first fully electric three-wheeler vehicles, Aslam emphasized that the EV policy had been developed in consultation with all stakeholders. The event, titled ‘Showcasing Pakistan’s First Fully-Electric Three-Wheel Vehicle,’ was organized by the Ministry of Climate Change in collaboration with the Board of Investment and Sazgar Engineering Works Limited.

Aslam stated that the comprehensive EV policy, approved by Prime Minister Imran Khan on November 5th last year, would contribute to the growth of pollution-free transport facilities in the country.

He further outlined the four key benefits of the EV policy, highlighting that electric vehicles would operate at 70% lower costs compared to their fuel-based counterparts. In addition to being cost-effective, electric vehicles are environmentally friendly and would help reduce the country’s oil import bill. Furthermore, their introduction would have numerous benefits for the overall environment, people’s lifestyle, and the aesthetic appeal of our cities, the adviser added.

Aslam also mentioned the ongoing efforts to localize EV manufacturing, aiming for Pakistan to join the global value chain of electric vehicles. The EV policy and economic incentives would be extended to the auto manufacturing sector to encourage local production of electric vehicles, he added.

Enumerating the advantages of electric vehicles, Aslam highlighted their emission-free nature, absence of noise pollution, and reduced fuel costs. He emphasized that traditional vehicles emit carbon dioxide, contributing to greenhouse gases and climate change, while electric vehicles do not produce such emissions, making them environmentally friendly and conducive to addressing climate change and environmental degradation.
