India’s Home Minister Amit Shah Expresses Grief as Lightning Strikes Claim 18 Lives in Gujarat
In the wake of intense storms that swept across India’s western state of Gujarat, at least 18 people lost their lives due to lightning strikes on Sunday, according to officials as reported by AFP.
The unexpected heavy rainstorms during winter caught many off guard, resulting in tragic consequences. India’s Home Minister Amit Shah expressed deep sadness over the deaths, stating, “I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their loved ones in this tragedy for their irreparable loss.”
Local administration is actively involved in relief efforts, and prayers are offered for the swift recovery of the injured. Gujarat state authorities confirmed that approximately 20 people lost their lives in the heavy rains, with 18 fatalities attributed to lightning. Additionally, around 40 animals perished in these weather-related events.
While flash floods and lightning strikes are common occurrences in India, experts have cautioned that the frequency of such extreme weather events may rise due to global warming. Amit Shah shared his condolences on the social media platform X, emphasizing his deep sorrow for the lives lost in the tragic incident.
