South Korean President Yoon Vows Decisive Action Against Climate Change After Devastating Floods
Following the tragic loss of at least 40 lives in the wake of severe floods and landslides, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has pledged to initiate a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s approach to extreme weather events caused by climate change, according to AFP.
The recent torrential downpours caused extensive flooding and landslides, with rivers and dams overflowing. Weather forecasters predict more rain in the coming days, raising concerns about further damage.
During an emergency response meeting, President Yoon emphasized the imperative of acknowledging climate change as a reality and vowed to take decisive action. He called for a paradigm shift away from viewing climate-related disasters as rare anomalies beyond our control. Instead, he stressed the need for exceptional determination to enhance national preparedness and response capabilities.
President Yoon announced the mobilization of all available resources, including the military and police, to support ongoing rescue efforts. He expressed concern about potential future damages as the season progresses.
Following the meeting, President Yoon visited Yecheon, one of the hardest-hit villages in North Gyeongsang province, where numerous houses were severely damaged by landslides. He pledged to do everything possible to restore the village and provide support to affected communities.
Most of the casualties, including 19 fatalities and eight missing individuals, were reported in North Gyeongsang province due to devastating landslides that swept away houses. An investigation has been launched into the flooding of an underpass in Cheongju, south of Seoul, where at least 13 people lost their lives while trapped in their vehicles.
President Yoon stressed the importance of preemptive evacuations and road closures as fundamental measures to prevent loss of life during disasters.
While South Korea has experienced recurring floods during the summer monsoon period, the country has typically been well-prepared, resulting in relatively low death tolls. However, scientists attribute the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events to climate change. President Yoon’s commitment to decisive action against climate change reflects the recognition of the urgent need for enhanced preparedness and adaptation measures.
