Princess Diana’s Iconic Evening Dress Fetches $1.1 Million
Princess Diana’s dress, accompanied by a matching illustration, defied expectations by fetching an astounding $1.1 million in a record-breaking sale. The black and blue ballerina-length gown, designed by Jacques Azagury, originally debuted in Florence in 1985 and gained iconic status when Diana wore it during a visit to Vancouver a year later.
Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) conducted the auction as part of the “Hollywood Legends” sale, featuring a diverse array of memorabilia. Despite an initial estimate of $100,000 – $200,000, the dress, along with its matching illustration, commanded an impressive $1,148,080. Julien’s Auctions proudly proclaimed that they now hold the world record for the most expensive dress worn by Princess Diana in an auction, surpassing the previous record of $604,800.
The dress, featuring a long black velvet bodice adorned with blue stars and a two-tier blue organza skirt with a sash and bow, captivated bidders and stands as a symbol of Princess Diana’s timeless style. In addition to this remarkable sale, a pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana for her 1981 engagement portrait to Prince Charles, crafted by David and Elizabeth Emanuel (designers of Diana’s wedding dress), achieved an impressive $381,000, surpassing its estimated value of $80,000 – $100,000.
