Revenge of Sith is making a grand return to theaters for its 20th anniversary. For a limited one-week run, the epic Star Wars prequel will hit select theaters on April 25, 2025. Fans can relive Anakin Skywalker’s dramatic fall to the dark side in new formats like 4DX for an immersive experience.
New Poster for Revenge of Sith Anniversary
Renowned graphic artist Matt Ferguson created new poster art for the re-release. It’s his most complicated work yet.
The artwork features Darth Vader’s looming mask, enveloping Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) as he marches to execute Order 66. It also showcases the iconic duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Anakin. The Coruscant skyline, with warships over the burning Jedi Temple, adds to the drama.
“The space battle and Mustafar elements are really complicated,” Ferguson told StarWars.com. “There are way more ships and explosions than on my other Star Wars posters. It’s the movie where it all really unravels for Anakin.”
Revenge of Sith: A Pivotal Chapter in Star Wars
Set a few years after the Clone Wars began, Revenge of the Sith is the final film in the prequel trilogy. It highlights the fall of the noble Jedi Order. A handful of survivors, including Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Master Yoda, are forced into hiding.
The Jedi Knights, once peacekeepers, have become generals leading a massive clone army. They fight a galaxy-wide war against the Separatists. Meanwhile, the sinister Sith reveal a thousand-year-old plan to rule the galaxy.
As the Republic crumbles, the evil Galactic Empire rises from the ashes. Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, is seduced by the dark side. He becomes Emperor Palpatine’s new apprentice—Darth Vader.
The film stars Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Hayden Christensen. Ian McDiarmid, Frank Oz (as Yoda), and Jimmy Smits also appear. Other cast members include Peter Mayhew, Ahmed Best, Oliver Ford Davies, Temuera Morrison, Anthony Daniels, Silas Carson, and Kenny Baker. Samuel L. Jackson plays Mace Windu, while Christopher Lee takes on the role of Count Dooku.
Revenge of the Sith was written and directed by Star Wars creator George Lucas.
Why Revenge of Sith Matters
Twenty years ago, in the summer of 2005, the Star Wars film saga came to an end. At the time, George Lucas promised the world that Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith would tell the entire story of the Skywalker family. This was before the 2008 animated TV series The Clone Wars and well before the post-2015 explosion of Disney-owned Star Wars content.
At the time, Revenge of the Sith was the most well-liked of the three prequel films and still holds a respectable 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It fully bridged the prequels with the classic trilogy, finally revealing exactly how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. It was also the last Star Wars film written and directed by George Lucas.
A Nostalgic Comeback
Easily the darkest Star Wars film up until that point, Revenge of the Sith showed Anakin fully embracing evil, slaying young Jedi in a way that made it hard to forgive Darth Vader. It changed the way audiences viewed the classic Star Wars films and cemented both Christensen’s Anakin and McGregor’s Obi-Wan in popular consciousness.
Now, two decades later, Revenge of the Sith is headed back to theaters for a limited theatrical run. This is a must-watch for die-hard Star Wars fans and newcomers alike, offering a chance to experience the epic story on the big screen once more.
