Wonka: Everything You Need to Know About the Timothée Chalamet Prequel

Fans of the Roald Dahl classic, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” will be delighted to know that Warner Bros. is set to release their blockbuster film, “Wonka,” in 2023.

“Wonka” follows in the footsteps of the 1971 classic, “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” and the 2005 adaptation with the same name as the novel. The new film explores the early years of the eccentric chocolatier.

Warner Bros. acquired the rights to Willy Wonka in 2016, and production negotiations began in 2018.

Release Date:

“Wonka” is currently scheduled to be released on December 15, 2023. The film was initially planned for a March 2023 release but was postponed due to adjustments in Warner Bros.’ 2022/2023 film slate. Despite challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions, the film is expected to be ready for its new December release date.

Cast:

The adaptation of “Wonka” features three confirmed stars. Timothée Chalamet, known for his roles in “Bones and All” and “Call Me By Your Name,” will portray the titular character. Chalamet, fresh from the November release of “Dune: Part Two,” was announced as Willy Wonka in 2021. Gene Wilder famously portrayed the beloved chocolate maker in the original 1971 film, while Johnny Depp played the role in the 2005 remake.

Paterson Joseph, known for his work in “Peep Show,” will star as Arthur Slugworth, one of Wonka’s rival chocolatiers.

During CinemaCon 2023, it was revealed that Hugh Grant will appear as an Oompa-Loompa, with exclusive footage shared with attendees at the event in Las Vegas.

Though the roles of other cast members are yet to be disclosed, “Wonka” includes notable stars such as Rowan Atkinson from “Blackadder,” Sally Hawkins from “The Shape Of Water,” and Olivia Colman, an Oscar-winner from “The Favourite.” Matt Lucas and Keegan-Michael Key are also scheduled for roles in the film, alongside other talented actors.

Director and Writers:

Paul King, known for his work on “Paddington” and its 2017 sequel, as well as “Bunny and the Bull,” will direct “Wonka.” The screenplay is co-written by King and Simon Farnaby, recognized for his contributions to “Horrible Histories” and “Paddington 2.” The production team includes David Heyman, Luke Kelly, and Alexandra Derbyshire.

Filming Locations:

Filming for “Wonka” took place in various locations, including England and Utah, United States. Chalamet was spotted on set at Verulamium Park in St. Albans, transformed into a wintry landscape with artificial snow. Other filming locations in the UK include Bath, Lyme Regis, Mapledurham, Wendover Airport, and the Warner Bros. studios in Leavesden, near Watford.
