Brazil: Bolsonaro challenges election results, signs of growing political unrest
A few weeks after the completion of the general elections in Brazil, a period of political uncertainty seems to be beginning once again.
Brazil’s current President Jair Bolsonaro has challenged the recent election results. He has said that the votes cast on about three lakh voting machines should be declared invalid.
However, he has not presented any evidence regarding rigging in the election.
In this election, his rival and former President of Brazil Lula da Silva has won.
Lula da Silva got 50.9 percent votes. This victory of Lula was shocking because till the last moment there was a close fight between the two.
Following the election results, there were reports and images of violence and arson as well as blockades by Bolsonaro supporters in different provinces and major roadways in Brazil.
Bolsonaro did not even publicly accept his defeat after the results came out.
However, his chief of staff had said that the process of transfer of power would begin.
After this, the Supreme Court of Brazil has issued a statement saying that by giving its approval to the transfer of power, Bolsonaro has accepted the results of the election.
But about three weeks later, Bolsonaro has officially challenged these results.
Brazil’s newly elected President Lula da Silva has said on this that the ruling party is insulting democracy by challenging the election results.
