Pervez Musharraf: Former President of Pakistan is no more, PM Shahbaz Sharif expressed grief

Former Pakistan Army Chief and former President Pervez Musharraf has passed away.

The Pakistan Army has confirmed his death to BBC correspondent Shumayla Jafri and said that it is saddened by the death of General Pervez Musharraf.

The Pakistan Army said “May Allah give peace to his soul and strength to his family to bear this loss.”

News agency Reuters has reported that 79-year-old Musharraf died in a hospital in Dubai after a long illness.

Last year it was reported that he has a complex disease named Amyloidosis. In this disease, the human body parts start to become inactive.

According to the UK’s Department of Health (NHS), amyloidosis is a disease caused by an increase in the human body of a type of protein called amyloid.

According to experts, excessive amount of this protein is harmful for the human body and it can cause the organs to stop functioning.

His family had said that he wants to come to Pakistan but it is difficult to get medicine in Pakistan.

Prime Minister expressed grief Pak Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed grief over the death of General Pervez Musharraf.

He wrote on social media, “My condolences to the family of General Pervez Musharraf. May his soul rest in peace.”

President Arif Alvi has also condoled the demise of former Pak President and said that may Allah give strength to his family in this hour of grief.

was born in Old Delhi Pervez Musharraf was born on 11 August 1943 in Old Delhi of undivided India. After partition, he moved to Karachi, Pakistan in 1947.

Musharraf’s father Syed Musharraf was a diplomat. He lived in Turkey from 1949-56 and joined the army in 1964. He graduated from the Army Command and Staff College in Quetta. He also studied at the Royal College of Defense Studies in London.

He served in various positions in artillery, infantry and commando units. He was also involved in the 1965 and 1971 wars against India. In 1965, he was awarded the Gallantry Award for participating in the war. And in 1971, he led a commando company.

After the coup of Pervez Musharraf in the year 1999, he declared himself the Chief Executive of Pakistan. He suspended the multi-party political system and the constitution. After this, in the year 2002, he became the President after the presidential referendum and was re-elected in October 2007.

But, after his removal from power, there were large-scale protests in Pakistan. After this, in the year 2008, he left Pakistan and went to London.

Pervez Musharraf returned to Pakistan again for the 2013 general elections but was disqualified to contest the elections. He was declared a fugitive in the year 2017.

He was accused of allegedly being involved in the assassination of former President Benazir Bhutto. He was also sentenced to death in December 2019 for imposing emergency and suspending the constitution.

A serious sedition case was launched against him. On this, Musharraf himself said that “This matter is completely baseless in my opinion. Leave aside the matter of treason, I have served this country a lot, fought wars and served the country for ten years.”
