What is Global Hunger Index

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a comprehensive means of measuring and tracking hunger at the global, regional and national levels.

The GHI score is typically measured on the values of four indicators, including malnutrition, severe infant malnutrition, stunted growth and child mortality.

The GHI has a total score of 100 points, on the basis of which the status of the severity of hunger of a country is shown. That is, if a country’s score is zero, then it is in good condition and if someone’s score is 100 then it is in very bad condition.

India’s score is 29.1 which comes in the very serious category.

Apart from this, there are a total of 17 top countries whose score is less than 5. These countries include countries like China, Turkey, Kuwait, Belarus, Uruguay and Chile.

On the other hand, if we talk about the position of Muslim-majority countries, then UAE is at 18th, Uzbekistan is at 21st, Kazakhstan is at 24th, Tunisia is at 26th, Iran is at 29th, Saudi Arabia is at 30th.

what is the status of india

In India, this time it has been found to be 19.3 percent, compared to 15.1 percent in 2014, if we look at the status of severe malnutrition in children, one of the four scales on which GHI is measured. This means that India is further backward in this scale.

On the other hand, if we talk about the scale of total malnutrition, then that too has increased significantly. This scale shows how much the total population of the country is facing shortage of food.

According to the index, where it was 14.6 percent in India between 2018 and 2020, it has increased to 16.3 percent between 2019 and 2021. According to this, out of the total 828 million people who are facing malnutrition in the world, 224 million people are in India only.

However, there is also good news for India in this index. India has definitely improved in two parameters of this index.

India ranks 35.5% in 2022 in terms of stunting in the development of children, compared to 38.7% in 2014.

At the same time, the child mortality rate has come down from 4.6% to 3.3%. However, India’s position has worsened in the overall score of GHI. Where this score was 28.2 in 2014, it has become 29.1 in 2022.

Talking about the status of total hunger in the world, it has remained stable in recent years. In the report of the year 2022, the situation of hunger in the case of the whole world has been kept in the middle category. Where the total score of the world was 19.1 in 2014, it has come down to 18.2 in 2022.

In this report, there are a total of 44 countries whose situation is at a very dangerous level, including India.
