India’s Political Theater: The Impending No-Trust Motion against PM Modi

The newly-formed opposition alliance in India has decided to present a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the lower house of parliament, Lok Sabha.

The move comes as a response to the harrowing Manipur incident, where two women were gang-raped in a field on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, near the state capital Imphal. The opposition is demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi provide a statement detailing the developments in Manipur after May 3 and the measures taken by the government to address the situation.

According to sources, the no-confidence motion could be tabled in parliament as early as tomorrow (Wednesday). Although the opposition alliance does not have enough votes to remove PM Modi from office, they believe that parliamentary proceedings should only continue after the Prime Minister addresses and debates the Manipur incident.

Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah has appealed to the opposition leaders of both houses for their cooperation in discussing the Manipur issue. He stated that the government is ready to engage in discussions and seeks cooperation from all parties to resolve this important matter.

The government prefers a debate in parliament without requiring specific answers from the Prime Minister. Earlier this month, 26 Indian opposition parties formed an alliance titled “INDIA” to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The alliance aims to safeguard democracy and uphold the constitution in the country.
