North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile, Condemns US Actions
North Korea has launched a short-range ballistic missile, covering approximately 570km (350 miles) before landing in the ocean off its east coast, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The missile test, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, comes amidst rising tensions and warnings from Seoul and Tokyo about potential long-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests by North Korea.
South Korea’s JCS condemned the ballistic missile launch, stating it is a clear violation of the UN Security Council resolution prohibiting the use of ballistic missile technology. In response to the launch, there were real-time information-sharing efforts between the United States, Japan, and South Korea, underscoring the activation of a missile information-sharing system.
North Korea swiftly criticized the US and South Korea through a statement from its defense ministry, citing military drills, displays of force, and nuclear war planning as provocations. The statement specifically addressed the presence of the US nuclear-powered submarine USS Missouri in South Korea, pledging to neutralize attempts to instigate a nuclear war.
The North Korean spokesperson also condemned the second Nuclear Consultative Group meeting between South Korea and the US in Washington, accusing the allies of escalating tensions through increased military displays. The incident heightens concerns about North Korea’s missile capabilities and its disregard for international resolutions.
