Russia said – not Germany and Japan but India will be given priority

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that India not only naturally has the ambition to become an important pole in the multipolar world, but it is also at the center of creating a multipolar world.

Earlier, Lavrov had recently described India’s stance on the war against Ukraine as balanced and praised the Indian foreign policy.

Now he praised India’s foreign policy in the Primakov Readings International Forum and described it as a natural contender for a pole in the multipolar global system.

Lavrov said that Western countries do not want to leave the dominant global system. They do not want to accept the reality of multipolar system.

It is clear that the new powers are not ready to accept the US-led world order.

But the western countries want to maintain this system by force. They are not ready to give up this habit that has been going on for five decades.

Lavrov insisted on making India and Brazil permanent members of the UN Security Council over Germany and Japan.

He said that both the countries are striving for this and this is proof of the growing aspirations of the countries that play an important role in the multipolar world system.

Yevgeny Primakov was a Russian politician and diplomat. He was the Prime Minister of Russia from 1998 to 1999. Before that, he was the Foreign Minister of Russia.

While being the Foreign Minister in 1996, he advocated a multipolar world order based on the alliance of Russia, India and China before the Russian government.

It was described as an alternative to a polar world order imposed by America after the Second World War.

He said that Russia needs to change its US-centric foreign policy. He advised Russia to strengthen its friendship with India and China.

He had said that in the multipolar global system, the trio of Russia, China and India will be able to provide some protection to the countries that want to make their own independent path instead of following the west.

Referring to the multipolar system in his speech, Lavrov once again emphasized on this trio of Russia, India and China.

He said, “Primakov’s idea of the trio of Russia, India and China was later transformed into BRICS.” Very few people know that RIC is still running. It is on the basis of this alliance that the foreign ministers of the three countries meet continuously.

Why so much praise for India?
Being the Russian foreign minister, Lavrov understands Primakov’s theory of multipolar world system very well and he currently sees the important role of India in this system, so what is the reason for this?

After all, why is he insisting on making India and Brazil permanent members of the United Nations Security Council instead of Germany and Japan?

Why are they saying that India is becoming a big economic power and in the future it can become the top economy of the world.

Why is he referring to India’s vast diplomatic experience in solving all kinds of problems and drawing attention to its leadership role in Asia.

In order to know the answers to all these questions, BBC Hindi spoke to Professor Sanjay Kumar Pandey in Russian and Central Asian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

He said, “We have to go back a little to understand the context of Lavrov’s statement. This is not the first time, when Russia has praised Indian foreign policy. Since the treaty of 1955-56 and 1971, the Soviet Union has kept India in the list of very important countries.

He said, “Even when the non-aligned policy was made, the Soviet Union recognized it and believed that these non-aligned countries have an independent foreign policy and the Soviet Union should improve relations with them.”

He said, “Soviet Union (Russia was a part of this Union) kept insisting on improving relations with India even among non-aligned countries. During the time of Leonid Ilyich, the Soviet Union made important agreements with India. Although in the nineties, Russia’s tendency towards Western countries increased, but in 1996, Primakov spoke loudly about the triad of Russia, India and China, i.e. RIC.

He says, “Primakov was in favor of Russia’s independent and autonomous foreign policy. A foreign policy whose axis is Eurasia. But there was an emphasis on making special relations with India and China as well.

Is India’s foreign policy independent?
Now once again he is talking about the trio of Russia, India and China and the multipolar global system. Why finally? Why Lavrov considers India as a pivot of this system?

Sanjay Kumar Pandey says, “When Russia attacked Crimea for the first time in 2014, India neither supported nor condemned it. He said that Russia may have some legitimate security concerns and interests in Crimea. Even during the Crimea and now Ukraine attacks, Russia saw that India’s policy has always been different from the western countries.

He says, “India did not support Russia, but seeing the language of Western countries and its restrictions, it also said that this matter will not be resolved in this way.” Prime Minister Modi clearly said in his conversation with the Russian President that this is not the time for war. But India did not even support the condemnation proposals of Western countries against Russia in the United Nations. ”

According to him, “This made it clear to Russia that India is different from Western countries in these matters
