Russia’s proposal in the UN passed with a majority, India voted in favor; 52 countries protest

In the United Nations General Assembly, India voted in favor of Russia’s draft. Russia’s draft “Combating the Glorification of Nazism” at the General Assembly was passed by a majority vote after a record vote.

Russia’s draft “Combating the Glorification of Nazism” at the General Assembly was passed by a majority vote after a record vote, and the committee formally approved the draft. 105 voted in favor of the draft, 52 against. Whereas, 15 members abstained from voting.

A total of eight drafts were approved by the committee at the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. The draft brought by Russia includes condemnation of the rights of indigenous people, privacy in the digital age, glorification of Nazism. Speaking on the occasion, the Indian representative said that it joins the consensus on the resolution with the understanding that the concept of indigenous people is not applicable in the context of the country.

105 voted in favor of the draft brought by Russia, 52 against, and 15 abstained from voting. The committee passed eight drafts on Friday. In which many human rights issues ranging from literacy related rights and protection of children from sexual exploitation to crime prevention and criminal justice matters etc.

The committee expressed deep concern about the inclusion of public demonstrations to erect monuments and glorify the Nazi past, including the Nazi movement, neo-Nazism and former members of the Waffen SS organization in the draft resolution. The United Nations said in its statement that the representative of the Russian Federation expressed concern over the increase in racist and xenophobic rhetoric and called for deportation of migrants and refugees against Islamophobia, Afrophobia and antisemitism.

Russia trying to justify war on Ukraine

expressed concern over Moscow’s attempt to counter neo-Nazism as a pretext to justify its brutal war against Ukraine. The representative of Ukraine stressed that the draft has nothing in common except a real fight against Nazism and neo-Nazism. At the same time, the representative of the United Kingdom also said that the proposal is part of Moscow’s effort to justify its aggression against Ukraine by forwarding lies and distorted history.
