Bangladesh Cricket Captain Tamim Iqbal Withdraws Retirement Announcement
Tamim Iqbal, the 34-year-old left-handed opener from Bangladesh, has made a surprising decision to reverse his retirement after a meeting with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s residence, involved Tamim’s wife, former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan.
Following Tamim’s retirement announcement, Litton Das was appointed as the interim captain for the second and third ODIs against Afghanistan. However, with Tamim’s change of heart, the captaincy situation may now be reassessed.
Tamim had initially announced his retirement from international cricket on July 6, just a day after leading his team in the first ODI against Afghanistan in Chittagong. During an emotional press conference, he tearfully expressed his gratitude to his teammates, coaches, BCB officials, family members, and fans for their support throughout his illustrious 16-year international career.
Tamim leaves behind an impressive legacy in international cricket, having scored over 15,000 runs, including 25 centuries. In ODI cricket, he holds the record for the highest run tally by any Bangladeshi player, amassing 8,313 runs, along with 14 centuries, a record among his compatriots.
