After France, Brazil, Portugal also in pre-quarter-finals: Ronaldo’s team beat Uruguay, Fernandes scored double
Portugal, led by star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, has entered the pre-quarterfinals of the ongoing Football World Cup in Qatar. His team defeated Uruguay 2–0. Portugal became the third team to qualify for the knockout round. Before Portugal, France and Brazil have made it to the top-16.
The first half of the match played at the Lusail Stadium on Monday-Tuesday night remained goalless. Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently left Manchester United, also failed to score. In the first half, the Portuguese team did not have a single shot on target.
Bentancur missed a goal chance
In the first half, Uruguay had good chances to take the lead, but Rodrigo Bentancur could not convert. Bentancur came very close to the goal post, dodging three Portuguese defenders. But, could not cross the ball past goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Brilliant save by Costa here.
Fernandes scored from outside the penalty box
Shortly after half time, Bruno Fernandes scored a brilliant goal from outside the penalty box in the 54th minute for Portugal. This was the score line for the stipulated 90 minutes. Then in extra time (93rd minute) Bruno Fernandes scored the second goal on penalty.
