Meta Aims to Challenge Twitter’s Dominance with New Social Media Venture
Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is reportedly developing a text-based social network to compete with Twitter, according to sources. The platform, which is currently in development, may allow users to follow accounts they already follow on Instagram, Meta’s image-sharing app. Additionally, it might enable users to import followers from decentralized platforms like Mastodon.
A spokesperson from Meta confirmed the development of the platform, stating that they are exploring the creation of a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, revealed that coding for the platform is underway, and the company aims to release it soon, potentially by the end of June. Leaked screenshots of the platform have surfaced online, indicating a layout similar to Twitter.
This text-based network, codenamed P92, could pose a significant challenge to Twitter and potentially attract a large user base, leveraging Meta’s vast Instagram community, which boasts around two billion users. However, the final success of the platform will depend on its ability to entice users to switch from existing social networks and rebuild their communities. It’s worth noting that Twitter has faced criticism for moderation issues, and Meta’s new social network may offer an alternative for users seeking a different experience.
