Strengthening India’s Defence: Ministry Grants Approval for 26 Rafales and 3 Submarines from France
India’s Defence Ministry Approves Purchase of 26 Rafales and 3 Submarines from France
In a significant development, India’s defence ministry has granted initial approval for the acquisition of 26 Rafale fighter aircraft and three Scorpene submarines from France, according to sources cited by ANI. The Defence Procurement Board has given the green light, and the deals are expected to be formally announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to France.
As per the proposal, the Indian Navy will receive 22 single-seated Rafale marine aircraft along with four trainer aircraft. The decision to procure these aircraft and submarines stems from the navy’s concerns about the country’s security situation and the need to address a shortage.
The existing aircraft carriers, INS Vikramaditya and Vikrant, have been operating with MiG-29s, and the addition of Rafales will enhance their operational capabilities. The submarines, on the other hand, will be built under the repeated clause of Project 75 at the Mazagon Dockyards Limited in Mumbai.
While the deals are estimated to be worth over INR 900 billion, the final cost will be determined through negotiations. India is also seeking concessions on the prices and is keen on ensuring that the aircraft are built within the country. To facilitate negotiations, a joint team comprising representatives from India and France will be formed.
This acquisition marks a significant step in India’s defence capabilities and showcases the country’s commitment to strengthening its armed forces. The procurement of Rafales and submarines from France will further bolster India’s maritime and aerial capabilities, contributing to its national security objectives.
