ISLAMABAD: Jane Marriott, the newly appointed British high commissioner to Pakistan, arrived in the capital on Sunday to assume her new position.

In her arrival statement, Ms. Marriott pledged to foster a green and sustainable bilateral relationship between the two countries. She expressed her commitment to work diligently in expanding ties between the United Kingdom (UK) and Pakistan.

“Our friendship is rooted in shared history and values, strong people-to-people connections, growing trade relations, and a renewed development partnership,” Jane Marriott stated. She expressed her delight at being in Pakistan, a country that holds great significance to the UK and has a longstanding relationship with it.

With over 1.6 million people of Pakistani heritage residing in the United Kingdom and contributing to all aspects of British society, Marriott emphasized the special and ever-growing bond between the two nations.

According to a press release from the British High Commission, Jane Marriott’s arrival comes at a crucial time for UK-Pakistan relations. The UK has significantly increased its aid spending in Pakistan, focusing on enhancing climate resilience and reducing humanitarian risks.

Additionally, the UK recently introduced the new Developing Countries Trading Scheme, aimed at facilitating Pakistan’s export growth by reducing tariffs and simplifying trade terms.

Jane Marriott has been a part of the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office since 2001. Prior to her appointment as British high commissioner to Pakistan, she served as the British high commissioner to Kenya from September 2019 to June 2023 and held the position of British ambassador to Yemen. Throughout her career, she has been stationed in the US, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan and led the UK’s Joint International Counter Terrorism Unit.
