Rainy Days Ahead Met Office Predicts Extended Monsoon in Upper Pakistan

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted more monsoon rains in the upper parts of the country during the upcoming week.

According to the Met Office, the monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are likely to penetrate the upper parts of Pakistan. Additionally, a westerly wave is expected to enter these areas on August 3 (Thursday).

The weather forecast predicts rain, wind, and thundershowers, with isolated heavy falls, in various regions from August 2 to 7. The affected areas include Kashmir, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur, Gilgit Baltistan’s Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar, Murree, and Galyat.

Furthermore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, and Nowshera are also expected to witness rains.

In addition, Kurram, Lakki Marwat, Kohat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Karak, Waziristan, Kasur, Mianwali, Sargodha, Khushab, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, and Bhakkar are likely to experience rain, wind, and thundershowers from August 4 to 7.

The Met Department has issued advisories regarding the impacts of heavy rains. Water flow in local nullahs and streams of specific areas may increase, which could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore. The heavy rains may also trigger landslides in vulnerable areas like Murree, Galyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The public is advised to take precautions and stay at safe places during wind-storms, lightning, and heavy rains. The PMD also warned that the wind/thunderstorms may cause damage to loose structures such as electric poles and solar panels.
