Qatar admits 400 to 500 laborers died in preparation for FIFA World Cup: Press Review

A top official of the host of the FIFA World Cup has admitted for the first time that 400 to 500 workers have died in the preparations for the World Cup.

This is the first time that Qatar has given such a big figure regarding the deaths of laborers. Till now the figures given used to be much less than this.

According to the news published in the English newspaper Business Standard, Qatar’s top leader Hassan al-Thawadi has accepted this in an interview given to British journalist Piers Morgan.

Thawadi has said, “This figure is approximately between 400 and 500. I do not have the exact number, but it has been discussed. But frankly speaking, the death of one person is too many.”

According to Thawadi, the dead included laborers involved in building infrastructure like stadiums, roads and hotels for the World Cup.

Earlier, the number of people who lost their lives during the preparations for the World Cup was said to be around 37 to 40. Along with this, Qatar has been saying that these people died due to reasons like heart attack.

After winning the 2010 Football World Cup hosting rights, Qatar has started building its infrastructure.

It is also considered to be the costliest World Cup ever because according to some reports more than $200 billion has been spent on it.
