Djokovic’s Expensive Outburst: Fined $8,000 for Racket Smash at Wimbledon
Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis player, has been fined a significant amount of $8,000 for racket abuse during the Wimbledon final, as reported by Independent.
In a historic victory, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz broke Djokovic’s unbeaten 34-match winning streak at Wimbledon, defeating the Serbian player in a thrilling five-set match to clinch the final.
Confirming the penalty, the All England Lawn Tennis Club announced that Djokovic will face a fine of £6,117 for the incident of racket abuse during the final on Centre Court. Djokovic had become frustrated during the match, leading him to break his racket, which resulted in a warning from umpire Fergus Murphy and a negative response from the fans.
Reflecting on the incident, Djokovic explained, “It was frustration… Tough couple of points. He played amazing to break my serve, which was enough to win the fifth.”
With his victory, Alcaraz not only secured the Wimbledon men’s singles title but also ended the 20-year dominance of tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Djokovic.
Furthermore, Djokovic hinted at the possibility of retirement following his loss in the 136th Wimbledon final, admitting uncertainty about his future in the sport. When asked about Alcaraz’s longevity in tennis, Djokovic jokingly responded, “He’s going to be on the tour for quite some time. I don’t know how long I’ll be around,” suggesting his own future might be uncertain.
