The King Arrives Lionel Messi’s Stellar Performance in Inter Miami Debut

In his Inter Miami debut, Lionel Messi stole the spotlight, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup opener with a brilliant free-kick deep into second-half stoppage time.

Despite only having three full training sessions with his new team, Messi showcased his trademark brilliance on the field. The match at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., saw Miami face tough competition from the Mexican visitors, who outplayed them at times.

Messi himself had limited opportunities throughout the game. However, he seized the moment when he earned a foul about seven yards beyond the penalty area. With a spectacular left-footed free-kick that eluded the defensive wall and goalkeeper Andres Gudino, he secured the winning goal, sending the sold-out crowd, including notable figures like LeBron James, Serena Williams, and Kim Kardashian, into a jubilant celebration.

The victory was significant for Miami, who had been struggling in the league, as it marked their first win since May 23. Messi acknowledged the importance of the win, stating that it would boost the team’s morale.

Robert Taylor also played a crucial role in Miami’s victory, scoring just before halftime, providing them with an excellent start in their three-team group, which also includes Atlanta United. The Leagues Cup features all 47 teams from MLS and Liga MX, making it a highly competitive tournament.

Former LA Galaxy winger Uriel Antuna equalized for Cruz Azul in the 65th minute, demonstrating their attacking prowess throughout the match.

Miami’s goalkeeper, Drake Callendar, played a pivotal role, making seven saves to preserve the lead and secure all three points for his team, including two crucial saves early in the match.

Lionel Messi’s entry into the match in the 54th minute received a standing ovation from the fans, who chanted “Mes-si, Mes-si!” as he warmed up on the sidelines alongside fellow new arrivals Sergio Busquets and Josef Martinez.

While Cruz Azul tried to level the score, Messi and Martinez were caught offside on potential equalizers. However, Messi’s decisive long-distance free-kick, which evoked memories of former England star David Beckham’s famous bending shots, sealed the victory for Miami in an unforgettable fashion.
