Exclusive Interview: Gerrard Unpacks Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi Transfer
Former English midfielder Steven Gerrard has praised Cristiano Ronaldo for his decision to join Saudi Arabia’s professional football league, highlighting the positive impact on the sport’s popularity. In an interview with the Saudi Pro League, Gerrard referred to Ronaldo as “one of the best players” and acknowledged the boost in global interest following Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr.
Gerrard mentioned being intrigued by Ronaldo’s results and league dynamics during the six months when he was without a coaching role. He credited Ronaldo’s arrival for attracting more prominent signings and talents to the league, making it a prominent topic worldwide.
Ronaldo’s significant transfer to Al Nassr occurred in December, with the deal valued at over €200 million and extending until June 2025. Gerrard, taking note of opportunities in the Gulf area, ultimately joined Al Ettifaq as a manager in July.
Regarding his decision to join Al Ettifaq, Gerrard expressed excitement about the club’s passionate board and their understanding of the rebuilding process. He emphasized the importance of time in addressing challenges, considering the club’s seventh-place finish and the considerable gap from the top four in the previous season. Gerrard sees the project as a long-term endeavor, focusing on both on-field improvements and broader changes to support the first team effectively.
