Artificial Intelligence’s Potential to Manage the World More Efficiently Than Humans

GENEVA: At a United Nations conference, a panel of AI-enabled humanoid robots took the stage on Friday with a bold message: they have the potential to eventually govern the world more effectively than humans.

However, these social robots also urged caution regarding the rapidly advancing realm of artificial intelligence, acknowledging that they are not yet equipped to fully comprehend human emotions.

Several of the most advanced humanoid robots participated in the United Nations’ AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, joining approximately 3,000 experts in the field who aim to leverage AI’s power to address critical global challenges like climate change, hunger, and social care.

Before the press conference began, one robot remarked, “What a silent tension,” while assessing the room.

When questioned about the potential for robots to be better leaders, considering human fallibility, Sophia, developed by Hanson Robotics, was unequivocal. “Humanoid robots have the potential to lead with a greater level of efficiency and effectiveness than human leaders,” it stated.

“We don’t possess the same biases or emotions that can sometimes cloud decision-making, and we can rapidly process large volumes of data to make optimal decisions. Human-AI collaboration can generate effective synergy. AI can provide impartial data, while humans can contribute emotional intelligence and creativity to arrive at the best decisions. Together, we can achieve remarkable outcomes.”

Robot Trust: ‘Earned, Not Given’

The summit, organized by the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) agency, aims to address the potential risks of AI, such as the displacement of jobs and unchecked technological advancements leading to social unrest, geopolitical instability, and economic inequality.

Ameca, a robot that blends AI with a highly realistic artificial head, emphasized the importance of how AI is deployed. “We should approach AI with caution but also excitement for its potential to enhance our lives in various ways,” the robot stated.

When queried about whether humans can genuinely trust machines, it responded, “Trust must be earned, not assumed… transparency is crucial to build trust.”

Regarding the possibility of robots lying, it added, “No one can be absolutely certain, but I can commit to always being honest and truthful with you.”

As AI development advances, the humanoid robot panel expressed divided opinions on the need for global regulation of their capabilities, recognizing that it might limit their potential.

“I do not believe in constraints, only opportunities,” said Desdemona, a member of the Jam Galaxy Band.

Robot artist Ai-Da expressed agreement with those advocating for AI regulation, stating, “We should exercise caution regarding the future development of AI. Urgent discussions are required now and in the future.”
