Tragic Incident: Landslide Claims Lives and Houses in Northern China, Death Toll at 21″
As China grapples with severe weather conditions, including destructive landslides and heavy downpours, the death toll from a landslide in Shaanxi province has risen to 21 people, with six individuals still missing, according to authorities on Sunday.
The landslide occurred on Friday in the village of Weiziping, south of Xi’an, sweeping away houses and causing damage to roads, bridges, and electricity supply.
Initially, Chinese media reported four deaths and 16 missing individuals on Sunday, but the toll has since increased.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with around 100 soldiers and firefighters mobilized for relief operations.
China has been dealing with deadly floods and unprecedented rainfall in recent weeks, with the death toll from storms in the northern part of the country reaching at least 78 as of the latest reported figures.
Typhoon Khanun, which made landfall in Liaoning province on Friday night, weakened into a tropical depression. Although it has dissipated, residual rainfall in the rugged terrain of the northeastern province still poses a risk of flooding to low-lying cities.
Rescue and emergency response measures are being discussed by Chinese authorities to address the flooding risks in badly affected provinces, including Liaoning, Shaanxi, Tianjin, and Chongqing.
