“Andy Murray Reflects on Retirement Possibilities: ‘It Could Be Last Year'”

Andy Murray addresses retirement concerns amid ongoing physical struggles

Veteran tennis player Andy Murray has opened up about the possibility of retirement due to persistent injury issues.

Murray, who will turn 37 in May 2024, has faced continuous injuries in recent years, impacting his performance. He won only two matches in his last five matches of the previous season.

Starting his 20th season on the ATP Tour on New Year’s Eve at the Brisbane International against Grigor Dimitrov, Murray expressed to BBC Sport that this could be his last year if the physical challenges persist.

“If I was in a situation like I was at the end of last year, then I probably wouldn’t go again. But then if physically I’m doing well and my results are good and I’m playing well, then that’s enjoyable, and I could see myself still playing. We’ll see how the year goes, see how the body holds up. If things are going well, I’d love to keep going. But if they’re not, and I’m not enjoying it, it could be the last year, yes,” Murray noted.

Murray, who arrived in Australia on Boxing Day, has engaged in practice sets with top players but faced time constraints and couldn’t complete a tie-break with Rafael Nadal at 6-6 on Saturday afternoon.
